Bowlers from India-England ODI series to get bravery medals during Republic Day parade

24, Jan 2017 By Sandeep Kadian

New Delhi: Every year on Republic Day, President of India awards the medals of bravery to the people from the armed forces for their exceptional courage in the field and also the civilians, who have distinguished themselves by their different acts of valor in different situations. This year, the list of awardees also includes the bowlers who recently participated in the ODI series against England.

As every ball was getting smashes for a boundary, these bravehearts kept running in to bowl and didn’t give up. Odds and the dew stacked against them, 300+ totals a foregone conclusion even before the innings started, yet they kept coming back. None of the bowlers thought about retiring even after all the punishment they took. For this supreme act of valor in trying circumstances, government has decided to honor them on the 26th of January.

“Being a bowler in India in limited overs cricket can test the character of the toughest of people. It takes real courage to withstand all that punishment and keep coming back for more. Some may call it stupidity but we recognize it for what it is, bravery. Someone like me would have faked an injury after the very first over to get out of there, like I do every time minister saab calls a meeting. That is why we have decided to honor them during the Republic Day parade along with other awardees”, a senior government official said.

“This recognition of their efforts will also boost their morale ahead of the T20 series starting later in the day when we expect them to take even more punishment. We are sure that they will show the same resolve and bravery that they showed during the ODI series”, the official added.

The T20 series kicks off later in the day on the 26th at Kanpur.

Meanwhile, Ishant Sharma is reportedly upset at missing out on this bravery award. “I kept getting smashed around all through the career and these guys get bravery award after just one series? This is unfair”, Ishant reportedly said.
