Kolkata. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has moved a petition in the Calcutta High Court seeking a stay on the scheduled marriage plans of Varun Gandhi, posterboy of the BJP and a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family as well as the Parliament.
Varun is getting married to Yamini Roy Chowdhury, a Bengali girl, in December later this year and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who is also Varun’s aunt, has been invited to attend the wedding; something that is worrying Mamatadi.
“CPM will use the pictures of Sonia Gandhi and Varun Gandhi together and try to scare away the Muslims from us and create communal tensions in the state,” Ms. Banerjee expressed her deepest fears as West Bengal goes to assembly polls within a few months.
“Court should postpone the marriage until after the assembly elections are over,” she demanded.
Varun Gandhi is accused of delivering a “hate speech” against Muslims during the last general elections in Pilibhit, something that is supposed to have made him a hero among the Hindutva supporters and a baddie among the Muslims. Mamata Banerjee believes that this fact could be misused by the ruling left front in Bengal to prove connivance of UPA with the Hindutva forces.
“If pictures of Narendra Modi and Nitish Kumar together can impact Bihar assembly elections, pictures of Sonia Gandhi and Varun Gandhi can also impact Bengal assembly elections,” Ms. Banerjee pointed out, claiming that the CPM was desperate to win Muslim votes and this could be the easiest way out for them.
When asked why she was not asking Sonia Gandhi to stay away from the marriage instead of asking the court to postpone the wedding, Ms. Banerjee claimed that she didn’t have enough time to travel to Delhi and “complete the formalities”.
“Kolkata is my home and I won’t leave my home,” she said.
Congress has not yet reacted to the development as the matter concerned members of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
“We believe Madam (Sonia Gandhi) will take a wise decision and that will be acceptable to everyone in the party,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said.
