New Delhi: Wedding season is almost upon us and just like every year, Delhi residents are expected to attend one marriage after another as thousands of marriages take place in the capital. Due to availability of very few ‘auspicious’ dates in an already short wedding season, thousands of weddings get scheduled on the same date and that results in shortage of guests at some weddings as people choose other weddings over them on that day.
To avoid this situation, people are now booking guests in advance and paying them a token sum to reserve them for the day of their marriage function. Explaining the need for this pre-booking, a Delhi resident Ajay Singh said ,”See what happens is that there are thousands of weddings on the same day and inevitably, everyone gets 3-4 invitation. Then they decide which wedding to attend based on the distance from their home, the traffic on that route, how grand the wedding is, which marriage function is likely to serve better whiskey etc and sometimes you lose out to the competitors and nobody turns up at your function except the angry Fufa. Now you need some guests for raunak and to manao that Fufa so to avoid such a situation, we have started pre-booking.”
Further, he added ,”We have personal experience, during my wedding, 75% of the guests didn’t turn up because they got a better offer from elsewhere. I had to drink while sitting at the mandap to finish all the alcohol we had ordered for the function. Ghodi ke aage bhi main akela hi naach raha tha. Now we don’t want a repeat this year for my younger brother’s wedding so we are doing everything to make sure everyone turns up. Fancy invitation card with gifts inside, that indicates that we are going to spend big at the wedding, we have kept the venue on a route with less traffic, and to top it off, we have paid a token sum of money to them to close the deal.”
We asked Ajay repeatedly but he refused to disclose the amount they are paying as he was afraid we could be from Income Tax department.
