It was a dream come true for Mumbai based Shaan Ghai, who was conferred with the Doctorate title on Monday for completing his PhD in Bollywood, which he was pursuing for the last 7 years.
Our team got in touch with Mr. Ghai or should we say Dr. Ghai and here’s what an ecstatic Shaan had to say, “First of all, I would like to clear one thing that I am NOT in any way related to Subhash Ghai or the singer Shaan. I have been conferred with this title because of my hard-work and dedication and not because of some ‘setting’.” he says.
“Now you must be thinking since I have a PhD in Bollywood, I must be a die-hard movie fan or I must be watching Bollywood movies since my childhood. Well, you’re wrong. There’s a twist here. The first movie I had ever watched in my life was Abbas-Mustan’s ‘Humraaz’. I liked the twists and turns in that movie so much that I wanted to live a life full of twists and turns. The fad was so much that I used to drive only on roads that had twists and turns. And then it hit me – the tree on the road as well as an idea. I had an MBA degree in Finance from Harvard. If I did a PhD in a field not even remotely related to my interests, it would be the biggest twist of my life,” he said.
We were confused just like the audience of Abbas-Mustan movies and we asked him to clear our confusion, to which he replied, “Yeah, I get it. You might not understand now. But if you really think about it, it would still not make any sense to you. I mean, what would be the point of the twist if it was this simple,” he stated.
We deviated from the topic and asked about his thesis, to which he replied, “In my final review, I presented my thesis. And then I was asked a question that is difficult even for die-hard Bollywood maniacs, let alone a person whose first movie was Humraaz. I was asked to (he gasps) distinguish between Force, Force 2, Commando and Commando 2. They showed me four action scenes and I had to match them correctly to the respective movie.”
He further added, “Force and Commando were easy since the action scenes that were shown were interesting. Now came the bad part – distinguishing the action scenes of Force 2 and Commando 2. How do you choose between two bad things? I was in a very big dilemma. But then I saw Sonakshi in one scene and I remembered myself making the joke – ‘Sonakshi gets movies by forcing his father – Sonakshi – got Force – by force’. This was the turning point. I picked the right one and here I am standing in front of you as Dr. Ghai,” he concluded.
We congratulate Dr. Shaan Ghai and wish him all the best for his future endeavors (we really hope there aren’t any).
