After getting frequently troubled on the sets of Padmavati by members of the Rajput Karni Sena, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali decided to hire bouncers to teach the troublemakers a lesson. However, due to dearth of funds following frequent vandalism and construction of the set, he made Ranveer Singh the ‘scarecrow’ to shoo the notorious members of the Rajput Karni Sena.
Ranveer Singh, who plays Alauddin Khilji in Padmavati, revealed his menacing look of the character, and it was labelled ‘deadly’ by everyone. Sanjay Leela Bhansali, clarifying why he chose this look for Ranveer, said, “We were so short of money after reconstructing the set that we could not afford bouncers. Hence, I made Ranveer look so scary that no Rajput Karni Sena member would dare to approach my set.” He further added that he styled Shahid Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s look after designing Ranveer’s.
“After investing all my money in Ranveer’s look, I had no money left to give to Deepika’s make-up artist. Aggrieved, she left Deepika with the unibrow and we had no option but to shoot the entire film with her unibrowed appearance,” said Bhansali, who also confessed that he reused all the costumes used in Bajirao Mastani for Padmavati.
It is also rumoured that Ranveer Singh shot all his scenes without a retake. “Sanjay sir would wrap my shoot quickly, after which he would ask me to open my hair loose and send me to the entrance of the set. Once I was there, no Rajput Karni Sena member would venture around my set,” said Ranveer. There were instances where members of the film crew would also feel scared when Ranveer stood at the gate, which resulted in multiple delay in shoots.
When we asked Shahid Kapoor how excited he was for Padmavati, he took out his phone and showed us his selfie with daughter Misha.
