Bengaluru: Vishal P, working for a leading Indian IT company had a terrible day at office. During his code review session, the reviewers were unusually harsh on him for writing such poor code.
Vishal was not among those engineers who would take something like this lying down. After he realized this code he has lifted from a website, he went there to blast the person who has posted such ‘substandard code’ in the first place.
“I would have given a befitting reply to my senior colleagues who were just showing off simply because our manager was present during code review process. I controlled my emotions because my hands are tied. Top management had chosen me for L1 Visa this time. After 5 years in the company I do not want to lose the golden opportunity of going to US over a code review session”, said Vishal who was looking visibly upset after the code review meeting.
When we asked Vishal, why he is so harsh on the ‘anonymous’ user who helped him to copy the code by posting it online? Vishal was quick to rebut, “You were not present during the meeting. What not I had to listen. I have not used even 10 percent of that tone and language in my online comment. I have just asked him, these are the code review comments, please do the necessary correction and post it online at the earliest”.
What if the anonymous user does not listen to him, Vishal said, “In that case I will ask my lead engineers who were on the review panel to write one sample code as per the guidelines they were commenting. I will follow that. But I know them well, saying is one thing, doing is another thing. If they cannot write, I will ask them to give reference of the websites from where they lift the code”.
